The grocery list for the whole family

Updated

“We’re out of cereal!” yelled from the kitchen, and forgotten by the time anyone gets to the store. With kaidashi, the whole family shares one grocery list, updated live on everyone’s phone: parents, teens, even the grandparents.

Everyone adds from their own phone

Your teenager just finished the cereal? They add it to the list from their phone, right then and there. Type the first few letters: kaidashi suggests what your household usually buys and guesses the unit (bananas by the kilo, milk by the liter). Got a barcode? One scan does it. Items someone else adds show up with their avatar, so you can tell at a glance what’s new. Everyone keeps their own phone, iPhone for some, Android for others (on Android, through the test for now): in the same household, the whole family sees the same list, live.

At the store, see what’s missing as it happens

Whoever’s doing the shopping watches the list fill up live, even from the store: the after-school snack someone asks for at the last minute shows up while you’re still in the aisle. Drag each item into the cart with your thumb, and the whole family knows it’s been picked up. Too quick? Tap “Undo” right after.

Who got what, when you split up the shopping

One parent at the supermarket, the other at the bakery with the kids? Sort items by store, each with its own color, and filter to see only what you need where you are. The cart groups what each person picked up, with the time: nobody buys bread twice.

Your place, the grandparents’, the vacation home

One household, one list: yours, the grandparents’, the vacation home. Switch between them by tapping the household name; each household has its own items, stores, and members. Doing your parents’ shopping too? Create a household for them: what they add from their phone lands on their list, not yours.

To invite someone, open your profile (your avatar at the top of the list), then My households › Share: have them scan the QR code, or send the link in a message. The invite is valid for 7 days, and signing in needs no password.

How to get organized as a family

  1. Create the family household and invite everyone with the link or the QR code: the other parent, the teens who have a phone, the grandparents if they shop with you.
  2. Create your stores, each with its own color: supermarket, bakery, farmers market, pharmacy.
  3. One rule for everyone: whoever finishes something adds it right away, from their phone.
  4. On shopping day, whoever goes filters on their store and drags each item into the cart. Splitting up the stores? Each of you filters on your own.
  5. Back home, tap “Clear cart”: whatever wasn’t picked up stays on the list for next time.

A sample family grocery list

To give you an idea, here’s what often ends up on a family’s list, sorted by store. kaidashi doesn’t come with a ready-made list: you build it as the week goes on, and the app then suggests what your household usually buys.

What kaidashi doesn’t do

kaidashi is a shared grocery list, not a family organizer app. There are no kid accounts and no parental controls: everyone signs in with their own Apple or Google account, and all members see and edit the same list. No per-person lists, no reminders, no budget. Whoever creates the household is its admin: they can rename it and remove a member.

Free, no ads, even with no signal

kaidashi is free, with no ads and no selling of your data. With no signal, you can add, check off, and edit items: everything goes through as soon as you’re back online. The list is only visible to the members of the household, and it’s hosted in France, by OVH (privacy policy).

Frequently asked questions

Can my kids add items?

Yes, if they have a phone and an Apple or Google account: invite them to the household, and they add what’s missing. There are no kid accounts or parental controls: all members see and edit the same list.

We have both iPhones and Androids at home. Does it work?

Yes: one household can mix iPhone and Android, and the whole family sees the same list. On Android, kaidashi is in closed testing on Google Play for now: leave the Google account email at the bottom of this page to join the test.

I also shop for my parents. How do I keep the lists apart?

Create a second household for them: what they add from their phone lands on their list, not yours. Switch between them by tapping the household name; each household has its own items, stores, and members.
