The grocery list for all your roommates

Updated

Four roommates, one fridge, and nobody knows who was supposed to buy toilet paper. With kaidashi, everyone in the apartment shares the same grocery list, updated live: each person adds what’s missing and sees what’s already in the cart.

One household for the apartment, with everyone in it

Create a household, call it “Roommates,” and invite your roommates with a link or a QR code: each of them joins in seconds, each from their own phone, iPhone or Android (on Android, through the test for now): in the same household, all your roommates see the same list, live. Whoever creates the household is its admin: they can rename it and remove someone who has moved out. Anyone can leave the household whenever they want; if the admin leaves, the longest-standing member takes over.

Who got what, without a group chat

What one person adds shows up right away for everyone else, with their avatar. At the store, you drag the item into the cart: the others instantly know it’s been picked up, and by whom. The cart groups what each person picked up, with the time, and you clear it once you’re home.

Stores to split up the shopping

Sort items by store, each with its own color: farmers market, supermarket, bakery, pharmacy… A filter shows only what you need to get where you are. Handy when one of you goes to the farmers market and another to the supermarket.

How to get organized with roommates

  1. One person creates the household, calls it “Roommates,” and sends the invite link to your group chat: everyone joins from their own phone.
  2. Create your stores, each with its own color: the supermarket down the street, the farmers market, the bakery.
  3. Just one rule: whoever finishes something adds it to the list right away.
  4. Whoever goes to the store filters on it and drags items into the cart: everyone else sees what’s been picked up, and by whom.
  5. Back home, they clear the cart. For expenses, keep the tool you already use (see below).

A sample roommate grocery list

To get you started, here’s what often ends up on a shared apartment’s list, sorted by store. kaidashi doesn’t come with a ready-made list: you build it as you go, and the app then suggests what your household usually buys.

Your roommates on one side, your family on the other

You can have several households: the apartment, and your parents’ place on weekends. Switch between them by tapping the household name; each household has its own items, stores, and members. Your roommates only see the apartment’s list.

What kaidashi doesn’t do: expenses

kaidashi doesn’t handle splitting expenses: no prices, no receipts, no “who owes whom.” It’s a grocery list, not an expense app. To balance what the apartment spends, keep the tool you already use (a shared expenses app, a spreadsheet, a shared kitty).

Free, no ads, even with no signal

kaidashi is free, with no ads and no selling of your data. With no signal, you can add, check off, and edit items: everything goes through as soon as you’re back online. The list is only visible to the members of the household, and it’s hosted in France, by OVH (privacy policy).

Frequently asked questions

Does kaidashi split expenses between roommates?

No. kaidashi doesn’t handle prices, receipts, or paying each other back: it’s a shared grocery list. For expenses, keep the tool you already use.

What happens when a roommate moves out?

They leave the household from the app, or the admin (whoever created the household) removes them. If the admin leaves, the longest-standing member takes over.

Do I need a signal at the store?

No. You can add, check off, and edit items offline: everything syncs as soon as you’re back online. One exception: looking up the name of a product that has never been scanned needs a connection.
